Canvas, cover images and visuals

Define the look of your cover images and diagrams once; every post can use it.

Settings → Workspace tools → Canvas. Two groups in the sidebar, each with its own New Canvas button.

Cover Images

A cover canvas is a style for the image at the top of a post. Kinds:

  • Full AI: the whole image is generated from the headline.
  • Semi-structured: a composed layout with generated and fixed elements (your logo, a colour band).
  • Line art: a drawn style.
  • Editorial image: photographic, magazine-like. The default for phantom sites.
  • Web search: a real image found for the topic.

Bind a cover canvas to a collection (Control Room → Setup → Delivery → Cover image template) and every new post gets a cover in that style.

Diagrams & Visuals

A visual canvas is a style for the visuals Auto-Pen's Visuals pass adds. You can create and edit Table canvases yourself. Free-form diagram styles are set up by our team for now: you pick from the ones already there, and ask us if you want a new one.

In a collection's Control Room → Setup → Writing → Auto-Pen, Visuals has two switches: Comparison tables fills the tables a template asks for (it never adds its own), and Free-form diagrams lets the writer design its own diagrams. Free-form diagrams can be bound to one style (or left on No style bound (house look)); Infer style from derives one from the collection's own site. On a single post, the Enhance panel's Guaranteed passes section has Run visuals now.

Generating a cover for one post

On the post: Document → Cover image. Generate in the collection's style, or compare: pick up to four image models and get one variant each, then choose. Over the API this is generate_article_cover, or generate_cover_variants then select_cover_variant. Pass reference URLs (--ref-url) to match the look of images you already have.

"No image model is connected yet." Letterstory connects image models per organization; ask us. list_image_models shows what's connected.
